Australia Day Honours

FORMER AMA president and GP Dr Mukesh Haikerwal has been awarded one of the highest honours on Australia Day, named an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO).

Dr Haikerwal was among at least six GPs to receive various honours for their tireless work and contribution to medicine, along with a string of notable specialists, medical researchers and senior health leaders.

The honour was bestowed on Dr Haikerwal in recognition of his services and advocacy through leadership roles in medical administration, public health promotion and within professional organisations including the AMA. 

Speaking to MO, Dr Haikerwal said he was humbled by the honour, and hoped he could “live up to the citations”.
