Ethics concern over failure to publish trial results

Examination of trials registered with the US website shows out of 585 trials, 171 (29%) remained unpublished and 133 had never posted any results.

The researchers said their investigation, which examined trials with more than 500 participants, suggested an estimated 250,000 people were exposed to the risks of trial participation without the societal benefits that accompanied dissemination of results.

This “violates an ethical obligation” towards trial participants and contributed to publication bias, they said.
