How to stop little ones squirming away from the stethoscope
EVEN after a few years practice as a doctor, basic examination techniques can let you down in the face of a 2-4-year-old child.
But Dr Hamish Steiner of Cooma, NSW, has a suggestion for GPs faced with kids who can contort their bodies like an Indian rubber man to avoid stethoscopic examination.
Dr Steiner asks the child if the stethoscope feels cold, then repeats the question each of the first few times he moves it over their thorax.
The child either answers or at least stops and thinks about answering.
