Blood donors not revealing risky sex, drug use: survey

The survey of donors – who all tested negative for transfusion-transmissible infections – found an estimated prevalence of ‘noncompliance’ of 1.65%.

Researchers from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service and the Kirby Institute said although this may appear reassuring, extrapolation to national donor numbers suggested about 10,000 a year were noncompliant.

The most common deferral category for noncompliance was women reporting having sex with an injecting drug user
