Coils are ideal as emergency contraception

Examining data from 42 studies over the 35 years, researchers found that when coils were used as emergency contraception, the failure rate was 0.09%, compared to 1–2% with ulipristal acetate and 2–3% with levonorgestrel.

In the studies, the delay between unprotected intercourse and IUD insertion ranged from two to 10 days, but the researchers recommended insertion within five days.

The authors said a barrier to greater use of IUDs would be removed if clinics offered ‘same-day insertion’.
