Combined stroke units discharge patients sooner
Stroke patients recover five days sooner when managed in a comprehensive stroke unit that has co-located acute and rehabilitation stroke care, a NSW study has shown.
In a proof of concept trial, researchers from Sydney and Newcastle compared outcomes of 20 patients admitted to comprehensive stroke care units with 21 patients managed in traditional stroke units that typically transfer acute stroke patients to a medical ward after seven days.
Health outcomes were similar for both groups of patients at discharge and at 90 days in terms of functional independence measures.
