Funding cuts force GPs to ditch after-hours care
A GROUP of frustrated and overburdened GPs say they have been forced to withdraw their after-hours VMO services from a NSW hospital amid concerns doctors in other rural communities may soon follow suit.
Nine GPs who have previously provided after-hours care for Pambula Hospital on the NSW far south coast will continue their VMO roles but say service cuts - including closure of the maternity unit - have led to the loss of experienced nursing staff.
From today, critical patients attending the hospital after 10 pm will be triaged by nurses and transferred to Bega Hospital.
