GP incentive scheme touted to slash repeat MI
The Heart Foundation and other groups behind the Secondary Prevention Alliance are calling for standardised care programs for MI survivors to help avoid repeat events and premature deaths.
According to Dr Rob Grenfell, national director of cardiovascular health at the Heart Foundation, the odds are stacked against “a significant number” of MI survivors who don’t get the advice and attention they need after they are discharged from hospital.
“It’s a failure of the health system,” he told MO. “It’s not just down to patients and GPs."
Even the best hospitals have an adherence rate of only 70% for cardiac patients leaving hospital with all the medications they need, either because they are not prescribed or not supplied, he said, adding a rate of 90% should be achievable.
