High dose statin use cut by NPS program

The government’s rational prescribing agency NPS MedicineWise has claimed victory in a campaign to reduce the prescribing of high dose statins.

The program known as “CVD risk guiding lipid management (2011-12)” achieved its aim of decreasing GP prescribing of higher strength statins and ezetimibe and also improved the use of an absolute CVD risk assessment tool in primary care.

Following the program, in which almost 40% of GPs in Australia participated, prescribing of higher strength statins was reduced by 7% as measured by defined daily dose
