Nitschke close to suspension

The board is investigating Dr Nitschke over the suicide of Nigel Brayley, the Perth man who died in May after communicating with Dr Nitschke. 

A statement on the AHPRA website said it was focused on public safety and managing risk to patients. 

"Immediate action is a serious step. The threshold for the board to take immediate action is high," it said. 

"The board takes ‘immediate action’ as an interim step when it believes there is a serious risk to public health and safety that needs to be managed." 

A spokeswoman for the medical board defended the decision to publish the statement, saying it did so to clarify its position after Dr Nitschke told media today that the board had threatened to cancel his registration. 

Dr Nitschke told AAP he would fight the attempt by the board to deregister him.
