Why I'm uneasy about being anyone's 'specialist in life'
Let us celebrate and advertise our careers for what they are, no more, no less, writes Dr Stephen Whiteside.
Every time I see the advertisement “I’m not just a GP. I’m your specialist in life,” I feel extremely unwell. To my way of thinking, it sends off all the wrong messages. It leaves me feeling alienated. I am not that GP, and I do not want to be.
Firstly, I am a generalist, not a specialist, and secondly, my expertise lies in medicine, not something as nebulous as ‘life’.
