5 minutes with...Dr Andrew Gunn
If you could cure one disease in your lifetime, what would it be?
Malnutrition. We’re closer to a cure for cancer.
What was the best book you ever read?
Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions. I love its silliness, the attempt to view our world without prior knowledge, and the author’s insertion as a feared character who can determine other people’s lives and actions.
What philosophical principle strongly informs the work you do?
Utilitarianism for triage, the Golden Rule for treatment, and truth, justice and love for everything else.
Have you ever tried using a complementary medicine or therapy and did it work?
Hypnotherapy, which works, and retail therapy, which doesn’t.
What is the single best piece of advice you would give to a medical student?
