Childhood gastroenteritis linked to long-term IBS risk

Acute gastroenteritis in childhood can predispose an individual to irritable bowel syndrome later in life, an Italian study has shown.

In a long-term follow up of more than 1800 people affected by a salmonella food poisoning outbreak in 1994, researchers found that children but not adults who had gastroenteritis showed a two-fold increased risk of IBS 16 years later.
