Ombudsman takes GP to court over alleged threats

THE Fair Work Ombudsman has taken a GP practice south of Brisbane to court over allegations it threatened an IMG for complaining about his pay.

The Ombudsman has begun prosecution of Windaroo Medical Surgery Pty Ltd, operator of the Loganholme Medical Surgery, the company’s sole director Sheila Pathmanathan and Dr Tam Thi Thanh Tran, a senior doctor and supervisor at the Loganholme practice.

Dr Tran is alleged to have threatened to make the doctor’s life “generally miserable” unless he retracted a complaint to the Ombudsman’s office; and also that “unspecified alleged patient complaints against him would be sent to the Medical Board of Queensland” if he quit the practice.

The Ombudsman says the doctor was still owed “a significant amount of pay” when he returned to India in May 2010. A spokesperson for the practice said it was unable to comment on the case.
