The study, in which 29 interns at two hospitals in Baltimore were followed for three weeks by trained observers, found 12% of their time was spent in direct patient care, compared with 15% reviewing patients’ charts.

The interns spent 6% of their time walking around the hospital, similar to the 7% of time spent on follow-up patient visits.

Computer time accounted for about 40% of interns’ time, 15% was spent on educational activities,
