New guidance warns of heart failure risk with 76 drugs and herbs

COMMON over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen, Gaviscon or nasal decongestants can trigger or worsen heart failure, specialists warn.

An American Heart Association (AHA) scientific statement provides for the first time an exhaustive list of prescription and OTC drugs, as well as complementary remedies and supplements, that could seriously affect patients with heart failure.

The problem of unintended side-effects is particularly acute in heart failure, as patients tend to have many co-morbidities, are on complex drug regimens, and are treated by a disparate number of healthcare providers, the AHA says.
