Deregistered osteopath fined for breaching orders

Robert William Jarvis was fined $12,000 in Wollongong Local Court after he was reported for improper behaviour with a young woman at the Wollongong Wellness Centre.

In 1993, Mr Jarvis was deregistered as an osteopath for five years by the Chiropractors and Osteopaths Tribunal for having sexual relationships with a number of female patients.

Before the tribunal, he admitted having sex at his Double Bay surgery with six patients during a 12-month period and accepted he had “overstepped the line”.

But he challenged the principle that the relationship between practitioner and patient could not be a balanced one, saying: “That is an old model.”

Mr Jarvis did not re-register to practise as an osteopath, but in 2011 he was found guilty of touching the breasts of a female patient and asking about her sexual activity while working as a naturopath.
