Farewell to pioneering GP who practised well into his 90s
DR ANDREW John Varigos, the Melbourne GP who cared for three generations of patients, has died aged 100, leaving a remarkable legacy within the Greek-Australian community in Victoria.
One of seven children born in South Melbourne, his parents John Varvarigos and Giannoula Lekatsas migrated from Ithaca in 1914 to St Kilda where horse-drawn vehicles and cable cars ran along St Kilda Road. Later his father ran a cafe and shop in Bourke Street.
