Switch to HPV screening will spare many from surgery

The switch to HPV-based cervical screening in December will reduce a woman’s lifetime risk of cervical surgery compared with the current Pap test program, cancer researchers say.

With the new screening program, women vaccinated against HPV will be at a 13% lower risk of cervical surgery over their lifetime compared with their risk if Pap smear screening was maintained, according to Professor Karen Canfell, director of research at Cancer Council NSW.
